Likeness without Reference: Cultures of Forgery
Curated by
Vaishnavi Ramanathan
Likeness without Reference: Cultures of Forgery was primarily conceived as an educative exhibition that tackled the issue of fakes and forgeries in the Indian art market. It outlined the different methods used by forgers and the underlying difficulty in authentication despite various counter mechanisms such as provenance, documentation and scientific analysis. Using case studies of artists and art forms that have been repeatedly subject to questions of authenticity, the show emphasized the concept of ‘due diligence’ essential for all parties, especially the collector and secondary dealer, involved in transacting a work of art.
